“Om” / “Aum”

Balinese Hinduism

Bali has become one of the most beloved places to practice Yoga in whether you are a beginner or have practiced yoga before because of its calm environment and locations. In Bali, majority of their population practice Balinese Hinduism which is a spiritual lifestyle and religion. The word “Om” has different meanings in every location that practices Hinduism, but I will talk about how it is symbolic in Balinese Hinduism and yoga in Bali.

Yoga is practiced religiously by those of Balinese Hinduism. While doing yoga, the word “Om” is recited before and after. “Om” means “all reality, in all nature.” It is the “vibration of being, life, and consciousness in all worlds and all creatures.” Since Bali is known for yoga locations, that is why I chose the symbol “Om.”

“Om” or “Aum” is symbolic because in Hindu religion, this word is considered Braham, the highest universal principle and ultimate reality in the universe. It is said that the word came from an ancient Indian ascetic tradition and Vedic religion. While the god of Brahma was meditating over the world he created, he would say “Om” which then became a common tradition then on.

This is a symbol reproduced by tourism because like I have mentioned before, Yoga is popular in Bali and many people come here to meditate and practice yoga. I believe this symbol hides more than it shows because the history behind the word is meaningful and how it became known requires research; it is not just something we know.
